Ratnagiri City sits where the Kajali River meets the Arabian Sea, a port town that has watched ships and empires pass through for centuries. It is the district’s headquarters, but it has never quite lost the unhurried character of the coast around it.

GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY

Ratnadurg Fort, built by the Bijapur dynasty and strengthened by Shivaji Maharaj in 1670, still stands on a headland above the harbour — its walls holding both an old lighthouse and the Bhagwati Temple, tended within the fort for centuries. Later, the town held its own quiet witness to history: Thibaw, the last king of Burma, lived out his exile here from 1910, and years afterward, the same grounds held Vinayak Damodar Savarkar under British restriction.

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of India’s early independence leaders, was born in Ratnagiri City in 1856 — his childhood home preserved here still.

A LAND THAT HAS ALWAYS HELD SPACE FOR THE SACRED

In Pawas, a village within this very taluka, Swami Swaroopanand made his home in the twentieth century, and it was here that he translated the Dnyaneshwari into words ordinary people could carry with them. His samadhi in Pawas remains, to this day, a place families visit not as tourists but as something closer to going home — a teacher still spoken of in the present tense by those who remember him.
